Safety tips

January 2005

Hi folks! Lots of families in District #14 use woodstoves, sometimes as a primary source of heat for their homes. When we respond to woodstove fires, it's usually because the woodstove has been improperly installed, maintained or used. Following are a few safety questions you might want to ask yourself if you have a woodstove in your home:

>> Is your woodstove properly installed? Keep it 36" away from combustible surfaces and make sure it has proper floor support and protection.

>> If you purchased your woodstove from a store, is it UL listed? Underwriters' Laboratories (UL) is a nationally recognized, nonprofit safety-testing agency. When a product is UL-listed, it means the UL has tested the item, and it meets their safety requirements.

>> If you purchased your woodstove used from a non-commercial source, have you considered having it inspected to ensure the stove's design and construction are safe and solid? Check the yellow pages to find a company that services woodstoves.

>> Are you using your stove to heat your home on a regular basis? If yes, be sure to clean the ashes from your stove every week and dispose of them in a metal container with a lid that you store safely away from your home and combustible materials.

>> When you use your stove, are you making sure it burns hot for 15-30 minutes each time you use it? This will help to keep creosote from building up in your stove/chimney pipe.

>> Have you had your chimney inspected or cleaned lately? This is important to do, especially if it's been a while since the chimney was last used.

>> Are you aware that paper, trash, and charcoal should NEVER be burned in a woodstove? Only use seasoned hardwoods and don't exceed the fuel capacity of your stove.

Well, that's all for now -- best wishes for a SAFE and happy New Year!!
